ABSTRACT: This study discusses the epidemiological, clinical, and pathological characteristics of two outbreaks ocular infection in ostriches (Struthio camelus) caused by trematode Philophthalmus sp. The occurred states Ceará Rio Grande do Norte Northeast Brazil. Ostrich farming was categorized as semi-intensive with free access to weir river. clinical symptoms for included nictitating membrane inflammation, epiphora (tearing), eyelid edema, congestion, eyeball destruction, emaciation, death, period ranged from 8 16 months. Macroscopically, thickening eyelids conjunctiva were observed, orange parasites infestation. Histologically, lesions characterized lymphoplasmacytic heterophilic, multifocal coalescing, moderate, chronic conjunctivitis associated hyperplasia ectasia Harderian gland, numerous parasites. oval flattened an oral suction cup, acetabulum, thick cuticle containing spicules. diagnosis philophthalmiasis based on findings morphological present conjunctival sacs which similar Philophthalmiasis can occur raised urban rural properties Northeastern Brazil, probably contact birds contaminated water, is severe that result loss death animals.

Prevalence of antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii in ostriches (Struthio camelus).
Serum samples from 973 ostriches (Struthio camelus) in Canada were examined for antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii by the modified agglutination test incorporating mercaptoethanol and formalin-fixed whole tachyzoites. Twenty-eight (2.9%) of the 973 birds were found to be seropositive for antibodies to T. gondii at titers of 1:25 in 15 birds, 1:50 in 12 birds, and 1:500 in 1 bird. This is the first...
متن کاملGrowth curves for ostriches (Struthio camelus) in a Brazilian population.
The objective of this study was to fit growth curves using nonlinear and linear functions to describe the growth of ostriches in a Brazilian population. The data set consisted of 112 animals with BW measurements from hatching to 383 d of age. Two nonlinear growth functions (Gompertz and logistic) and a third-order polynomial function were applied. The parameters for the models were estimated us...
متن کاملMechanics of cutting maneuvers by ostriches (Struthio camelus).
We studied the strategies used by cursorial bipeds (ostriches) to maneuver during running. Eight ostriches were induced to run along a trackway and execute turns. Ground reaction forces and three-dimensional kinematics of the body and leg joints were simultaneously recorded, allowing calculation of joint angles and quasi-static net joint torques. Sidesteps, where the leg on the outside of the t...
متن کاملBiochemical composition of urine from farmed ostriches (Struthio camelus) in Botswana.
Biochemical and qualitative evaluation of the supernatant of urine from hydrated farmed ostriches (Struthio camelus) indicated that the urine was comparable to that described by other workers. The disparities obtained between the biochemical constituents in the present and previous studies were partly attributed to the state of hydration influenced by climatic factors. Results of the cytologica...
متن کاملA note on endoparasites of wild ostriches (Struthio camelus) in the Mokolodi Nature Reserve, Gaborone, Botswana.
A study was undertaken to investigate the prevalence of endoparasites of wild ostriches at Mokolodi Nature Reserve, Gaborone, over a 7-month period. Large numbers of strongyle eggs were recovered from faecal material in April and September and a decline in the strongyle egg counts was evident during June and July. Noteworthy was the absence of helminth eggs in faecal samples collected from chic...
